MELBOURNE: Two types of baby pacifiers have been recalled after putting infants at risk of choking.

The Baby Joy Orthodontic Pacifiers Soft Natural Latex and the Baby Pacifier 2 failed stringent safety tests and could become stuck in a baby’s mouth and block air supply, New South Wales State Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge said.

“They have failed to meet the basic mandatory safety requirements introduced by the state government in December 2008 and pose a serious health risk to babies,” she said in a statement.

The safety shields on the Baby Joy Orthodontic Pacifiers Soft Natural Latex and the Baby Pacifier 2 were not the required size to stop the dummies from lodging in a child’s throat, Judge said.

The teat and ring on the Baby Pacifier 2 dummies detached during safety testing, posing a serious choking hazard.

Judge has urged consumers to immediately return the dummies, which are manufactured in Taiwan and China, to the place of purchase for a full refund. -- Bernama
